The following members of Prepare
Tomorrow’s Parents’ Board of Directors and Advisory Board have particular
experience with legislation requiring or recommending parenting education for
children and teens. They will be valuable resources for advocates both within and
outside their states.
California
Californians for Parenting Education in Schools (CAPES) works with legislators and
educators to further the inclusion of parenting education for children in

SenatorJohn Vasconcellos has been a longtime vocal proponent of parenting education, who
introduced legislation during several sessions. This included comprehensive
bills proposing mandatory parenting education for Grades 9-12. (Parenting
education for Grades 7-8 is already covered as a recommendation in the California statutes).

Connecticut
Connecticut Coalition for
Parenting Education, about 40
organizations and individuals working toward state legislation to make sure all
students receive education in parenting and child development before graduating
from high school. As a Wallingford,
Connecticut School Board member,
Coordinator Joan Message Barbuto was instrumental in making Parenting Education
mandatory for all 6th-7th grade students; in addition, about 25% of 8th grade students take an entire quarter
year of parenting education. Joan Barbuto is also a parenting educator, and
author of The ABCs of Parenting as well as a graduate thesis, The
Need for Mandatory Parenting Education in High Schools, which is available
through Prepare Tomorrow’s Parents.

Former State
Representative, Mary B. Schroer, organized
a broad-based coalition to draft and support model legislation to add "age-appropriate
parenting education for all children in Grades K-12" to the recommended
core academic curriculum. She has also chaired the Board of Trustees of the
Washtenaw County Community College Board and has been a member of the Washtenaw
County School Board Association.
